So I am back with another blog post on PowerApps portal. And again with a feature which is quite useful and used by a lot of users.

In this blog I am going to explain Reset functionality of a PowerApps Portal. You are wondering isn’t Reset just a button click and then your portal is gone? Well, resetting a portal is fairly easy. All you need is just click of a button. However in this blog I will concentrate on what actually gets reset and what not when you perform this functionality.

There is whole lot of information on this reset functionality. on the internet But surprisingly it does not cover the whole picture. So even experienced consultants does not carry the right expectation post a reset operation.

To reset a portal, we need to follow the below steps

  • In the popup window, click on Administration. You will land on the Power Portal Administration center. On the left navigation when you click on “Portal Actions”, you will have the reset functionality.

Before I go ahead and click on the Rest button, let’s understand why we need Reset functionality. Reset is required when your portal provisioning has gone wrong. Or you want to make sure it is no longer accessible. Or you are moving your organization to another tenant or data center.

So let’s click on Reset and see what happens. I get a confirmation popup whether I want to reset.

It’s always good to see what’s the message in the confirm dialog. It says post this action the portal will not accessible. Well, we already discussed it. So no worries. I go ahead and confirm by clicking the Reset button.

Suddenly everything vanish and you see the below screen with the information that Reset operation is in progress.

I take a nice coffee break and come back in few minutes. Once I am back, the first thing I do is login to the PowerApps maker portal. And expected, I don’t see my portal app in the list of Apps which is kind of expected right?

So the first takeaway – “When you reset a portal, the portal app is no longer available”

So what’s next. We manage our portals using the Portal management app, a model driven app to manage applications.

When I go to the apps list, I could still see the Portal management app.

Second takeaway – Portal management model driven app does not get deprovisioned when the portal is reset.

That’s good stuff. We are learning as we progress.

My next verification step is to check for the portal data. I open the portal management app and verify the portal data. All the configuration data is still intact.

Third takeaway – When you reset a portal the portal data and portal solutions are not deleted. You have to delete them manually.

This is perhaps one of the biggest misinformation that many experienced consultants carry too. “Resetting a portal delete all portal configurations and solutions” – Now you know that it is in-fact completely wrong.

What is my final investigation? I login to Azure Active directory -> App Registrations and I don’t find any apps being registered there.

Fourth takeaway – When a portal is reset, the portal app is removed from Azure active directory.

Now that’s quite a learning I shall say.
