Manger can now view reportee's personal views in CDS/ Dynamics 365 – Did you know that?

How can one user see the personal views of another user in Dynamics 365/ CDS? Be the manager of the user or higher in position related to the user and enable hierarchy security.

Well this one came as pure surprise. And all while I was working on a customer demo. All this time I was aware that Personal views created in Dynamics 365/ CDS is indeed personal. An administrator can’t even see my personal views after all.

Not so fast. Your manager now control even your personal views you created in Dynamics 365/ CDS. Gosh! Didn’t the manager already had enough control over my career. Now he has one more to it.

Keeping the thought aside, let’s dive deep into this. For many of you reading this, till this point you might be thinking, come on! that ain’t happening. But yes it is happening. Let’s see it in action.

For this demo, I have created couple of users.

Debajit (it’s me) and Chandana are couple of users in the CDS environment. And I have set up Chandana as the manager of mine. I can never be manager after all!

Now the next step is to enable Hierarchy Security for the organization.

I have configured Manager security but Position hierarchy works too. Once hierarchy security is enabled, Chandana (my manager can view all my personal views). And guess what she can edit it too because I am her direct reportee.

Just like it works with other records.

Now I have made another user – Sakthi as the manager of my manager – Chandana. So now I am an indirect reportee of Sakthi.

When Sakthi login, he can see my personal view as well. But can’t edit it as I am his indirect reportee.

Awesome isn’t it. Something I have not know for sometime. And then I thought when it got introduced. My initial hunch was – must be 2020 release wave 2. But in-fact not the case. This is even working for the environment which does not have release wave 2 features enabled.
